What is Capitalize?

Capitalized case (also called word case or start case) capitalizes the first letter of every single word in the text. All other letters are converted to lowercase. Unlike Title Case, which follows grammatical rules about which words should be capitalized, Capitalize Case applies the same rule universally to every word without exception.

For example, "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" becomes "The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog." Even small function words like "the," "a," and "of" receive a capital first letter.

This distinction from Title Case is important: Title Case follows style guides (AP, APA, Chicago) that specify which words should remain lowercase. Capitalize Case has no such exceptions — every word gets a capital. This makes it predictable and useful in contexts where you want consistent visual treatment regardless of grammatical function.

How to Convert to Capitalize

  1. Enter your text in the text area above — type directly or paste from another source.
  2. Click the Capitalize button from the case options.
  3. Copy or download your capitalized text instantly.

The converter lowercases all letters first, then capitalizes the first character of each word. This ensures consistent results regardless of the original capitalisation of your input.

When to Use Capitalize

Use Capitalize Case when you need every word to start with a capital letter regardless of the word's grammatical function. It's commonly used for product names and brand names where every word should be visually prominent, for button labels and menu items in software interfaces, for database entries like contact names and addresses, and for taglines and short promotional phrases.

It's also the default format in many CMS systems for auto-generating titles from slugs, and in spreadsheets for normalizing name fields.

Common Use Cases for Capitalize

  • Formatting product and brand names
  • UI button labels and navigation menu items
  • Normalizing name fields in databases
  • Creating consistent headings for cards and listings
  • Auto-formatting titles from URL slugs
  • Taglines and short marketing copy

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between capitalize case and title case?

Capitalize case (or start case) capitalizes the first letter of every word without exception. Title Case follows style guide rules where small function words (a, an, the, and, but, or, etc.) remain lowercase unless they are the first or last word. If you need grammatically correct titles, use Title Case.

Does capitalize case affect numbers or punctuation?

No. Only the first alphabetic letter of each word is capitalized. Numbers, punctuation, and symbols remain unchanged.

What happens to already-capitalized text?

The converter first lowercases all text, then capitalizes the first letter of each word. This ensures consistent output even if your input is mixed case or ALL CAPS.

Is capitalize case the same as title case?

They are similar but not the same. Capitalize case capitalizes every word. Title Case follows grammar rules and keeps minor words lowercase. For casual or design use, Capitalize Case is fine. For formal documents, use Title Case.
